The 11th annual Cortez Historic Preservation Day will take place May 22.

Walking tours will be offered at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.. The 10:30 a.m. tour will feature “10 buildings that made Cortez history” on Main Street between Market and Chestnut streets. The 3:30 p.m. tour will revisit historic Montezuma Avenue.

A preview of the Montezuma Heritage Museum, 35 S. Chestnut St., will take place 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sign up and meet for the free walking tours at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St. Reserve a spot by calling the center at 565-1151. Reservations are not needed to visit the museum.

Cortez Historic Preservation Day is sponsored by the Cortez Historic Preservation Board in cooperation with the Cortez Cultural Center, the Montezuma County Historical Society and Cortez Retail Enhancement Association.

The Cortez Historic Preservation Board was formed in 1996 to protect historic signs on Main Street. The Board advises City Council on matters pertaining to historical preservation within city boundaries. The board maintains a City Register of Historic Structures, Sites, Districts and Signs.
