Cortez fire district puts training house up for sale

The Cortez Fire Protection District voted on Monday to sell its old training house for $10,000.

The district has been using a donated building on South Broadway for fire training for about three years, but Fire Chief Jeff Vandevoorde said they have gotten as much use out of it as they can. The new fire station will have its own training rooms, and they already have a warehouse they can use for training in the meantime.

The district board voted unanimously to sell the building to a private buyer who wants to turn it into a rental property.

Fire district board member Orly Lucero said the district should have asked for more money. But Vandevoorde said $10,000 was the best offer they were likely to receive, since the building is in poor repair and didn’t originally cost them anything.

“It’s getting to the point where you can see holes in the ceiling,” Vandevoorde said. “I’d recommend we get rid of it.”

Vandevoorde said the old training house has served firefighters well, but it’s time to move on.
