Cortez duo’s good deed saved vacation

I wanted to let your readers know what a gem you have in the principal at Kemper Elementary School, Jamie Haukeness. Jamie and his amazing daughter Amanda truly embody the best qualities in people.

A couple of weeks ago I left Albuquerque, headed to the Pacific Northwest for a vacation – and on that very first day, after getting gas, I left my wallet on top of my car as I drove out of Moab.

Jamie and Amanda found it in the middle of the street, took it to the police station, found my email address online and sent me a message. But they didn’t stop there – since I was on vacation I had a reply email saying I wouldn’t get the message for a couple of weeks, giving my co-worker’s information if anything was urgent. So Jamie also emailed her. And Amanda sent me a Facebook message!

Luckily I heard from my co-worker before we got out of Utah, so it only added a couple hundred miles to the trip. I turned around right then and drove back to retrieve it with all my cards, ID and cash in there.

I have never lost a wallet before and when I realized it was gone (about five minutes before I got the text from my co-worker) all I could think about was a ruined vacation, lost money, replacing credit cards, a new driver’s license and so on. But because Jamie and Amanda took the time to turn it in and contact me, nothing was ruined at all.

Jamie and Amanda should restore everyone’s faith in our fellow human beings – they went above and beyond, and I am truly blessed that they both crossed my path.
