Cortez could be more pedestrian-friendly

The new crosswalks in Cortez are a good start but Cortez still needs to protect visitors. As a former resident and recent tourist, I would recommend two crosswalks, between Giant and the Econolodge, and between Hampton Inn and Century 21.

People who are staying in Cortez either rode a tour bus or drove a long way. Many are not getting back in their cars to cross the street nor are they walking a quarter of a mile to cross at the light. They jaywalk. And the police provide no incentive for drivers to slow to 35 by that poin;, most are in the high 40s until Safeway. It is a recipe for auto-pedestrian collision.

Speed enforcement and crosswalks are a cheap, easy fix to this problem. An additional traffic light at Main Street and Cactus Drive with a no-right-turn-on-red from Cactus to Main would solve safety issues at that intersection.
