Cortez centers safety with updated Fourth of July plans

While last year’s fireworks ended prematurely after a few unexpected interruptions, Cortez is putting a greater emphasis on safety this year, although not at the cost of a jam-packed day of fun.

Parque de Vida will again be the site of Cortez’s annual Fourth of July Celebration from 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring food vendors, a beer garden and live music along with the usual car show and fireworks. But because last year’s fireworks were stopped when a brush fire, a medical emergency and an incident at the skate park all coalesced in a one-mile radius, Cortez’s newly released plans are placing an additional emphasis on available safety services.

“We will be well-staffed and coordinated to support a safe event for our community,“ said Interim Police Chief Andy Brock. ”Should something unfortunate occur, we will have resources available to respond quickly.”

In addition to a steady partnership with the Police Department and the Cortez Fire Protection District, as well as putting up a first aid tent, the city will include additional resources at the celebration to ensure the day carries on as smoothly as possible.

The Montezuma County Community Emergency Response Team will be present to keep a tight perimeter around the fireworks safety zone. Also available will be a newly hired Lead Park Ranger, Jay Dollar, a former 911 dispatcher. While Dollar is still in training and therefore not yet fully deployed, he’ll still be on site to offer extra assistance.

The city is reminding attendees of the celebration to sign up for the Everbridge Emergency Alerts system to stay informed on any inclement weather, traffic delays or safety announcements.

The fireworks launch location will be in Parque de Vida’s center, between the playground and the Recreation Center, north of the pond. Food vendors will be on the south end of the Recreation Center parking lot, while the middle and north fields, including the playground and baseball field, will be inside the fireworks safety perimeter and closed off for the event.

Local nonprofit Fundamental Needs will host live music and the beer garden this year, while the car show will be produced by BumzArodn.

“We want to grow events, support community spirit, and eventually, put Cortez on the map as a regional event draw to support our local economy,” said Parks and Recreation Director Creighton Wright. “It is our goal to host events that are, above all, safe, and fun, festive, and create lasting memories for our participants.”
