A convicted sex offender has been indicted on nine new felony counts of sexual assault on a child.

The Montezuma County grand jury indicted Andrew Allmon, 55, of 600 N. State St. earlier this week, charging him with nine felony sex offenses. The alleged sex crimes were committed between June 3 and June 17, court records reveal.

The indictment charges Allmon with three counts of sexual assault on a child less than 15 years of age, three counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust. and three counts of sexual assault on a child with a pattern of abuse.

As of press time, Allmon remained in custody on a $75,000 bond.

Allmon is listed as a convicted sex offender in Colorado, stemming from a 2008 conviction in San Juan County, N.M., on charges of false imprisonment and sexual assault of a minor, said a Cortez Police Department spokesperson.

Prior to his arrest on Aug. 22, Allmon was included neither on the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office’s nor the Cortez Police Department’s online sex offender registries. Federal law requires convicted sex offenders to register with local law enforcement every quarter, including photographs and fingerprints.

In related news, Alden YellowEagle, 54, of Towaoc, re-registered with local authorities as a convicted sex offender on Aug. 20, after failing to so on July 13.

Sheriff’s officials said YellowEagle voluntarily turned himself to local authorities to re-register as a convicted sex offender after the U.S. Marshal’s Office was asked to conduct an investigation.

YellowEagle was convicted on federal charges in 2005 of abusive sexual contact.
