FARMINGTON – At both the Farmington Sports Complex and Ricketts Park, teams were moving on deeper into the championship bracket or hanging on to play another day during second round action of the Connie Mack World Series.

The Midland Redskins and D-Bat United staved off elimination, with each team earning wins at the Sports Complex after opening the tournament on a losing note.

The Albuquerque Baseball Academy and NOLA Cardinals were the first teams to be eliminated from the event, while the Dallas Tigers and Colton Nighthawks remain unblemished after two games in the championship bracket.

The Southern California Renegades move right along, winning by a final of 8-3 over Dulin’s Dodgers in second round championship bracket action Tuesday night at Ricketts Park.

Here’s a look at the action from Tuesday.

Southern California Renegades 8, Dulin’s Dodgers 3

Wyatt Hanoian and Matthew Thomas scored a pair of runs as the Southern California Renegades maintain their perfect record through the Connie Mack World Series with an 8-3 victory Tuesday night over the Dallas-based Dulin’s Dodgers.

The Renegades scored six runs in the bottom half of the first inning and never trailed in a solid performance both at the plate and from the pitcher’s mound.

Dodgers starting pitcher Landon Karrh stumbled coming out of the gate in Tuesday’s contest, allowing five runs to score on five hits and a pair of walks. He left the game in favor of Kaden Long without recording an out.

Derek Gonzalez and Zack Fjelstad each had big nights at the plate for the Renegades. Gonzalez drove in a pair of runs while Fjelstad also drove in two with back-to-back singles in the first and second innings.

After giving up a pair of runs on four hits, Renegades starting pitcher Alex Conover was pulled in favor of Matt Kaiser after going 2 ⅓ innings. Conover struck out six and walked three while throwing 54 pitches.

“We had two big pitching performances tonight,” said Renegades head coach Si Pettrow. “We knew we needed those two guys to go out there and compete, and they did all the right things.”

Kaiser was solid on the mound, throwing just 34 pitches in 2 ⅔ innings, striking out four and not allowing a batter to reach. The Dodgers failed to get a batter on base after Kendyl Johnson’s two-out single in the top of the second inning.

From Los Alamitos High School in Orange County, Kaiser is a recent commit to Concordia University of Irvine. He’s learned well this past week to handle the changes from pitching at sea level in southern California to the higher elevations of northwest New Mexico.

“I was a little tired and fatigued the first few days, but now it’s a lot better,” Kaiser said. “My cutter was working really well for me and I had great help behind me tonight in the field.”

The Renegades have a bye on Wednesday and will be back in action on Thursday. Meantime, the Dodgers drop into the consolation bracket and will face the Mississauga Tigers at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday at Ricketts Park.

Oklahoma Express 11, 505 Panthers 3

The Oklahoma Express staved off elimination on Tuesday night, moving on in the 2023 Connie Mack World Series after eliminating the 505 Panthers in a consolation bracket showdown at Ricketts Park.

For the Express, which lost their opening game of the CMWS in a 12-7 defeat on Monday, the victory over the Panthers extend their series at least one more game.

For the Panthers, which lost its opening game by an 11-3 margin on Monday to the Southern California Renegades, the defeat is the second loss to the Express in their last three games and brings the summer campaign to a close with an overall record of 15-8-1 and a record of 0-4-1 in the Connie Mack World Series.

“Of course we had higher expectations,” said Panthers coach John Kuhn. “But these boys played their hearts out and definitely left it all on the field.”

Anthony Smith and Devin Mitchell each hit a home run in the elimination contest, combining to go 3-for-7 at the plate with three runs batted in and three runs scored. Leadoff hitter Cale Wetwiska went 3-for-4 at the plate while scoring three times, while Klete Finley and Smith each recorded multiple hits in the contest.

Elijah Long and Jacob Kuhn provided most of the spark for the Panthers offense on the night. Kuhn scored a run while going 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Long also drove in a run while collecting a pair of hits in the loss.

“We’re very proud of all of them,” Kuhn said after the loss. “Hopefully they all learned something from this experience that will help them in the future.”

Three Express pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters in the win, with starter Jackson Pickelsimer throwing three innings and striking out six batters. Tristan Russel and Twine Palmer closed out the contest, combining to strike out seven batters over four innings, surrendering only two hits and two walks in the process.

The win over the Panthers sets up a 1 p.m. Wednesday clash at Ricketts Park against in-state rival Tulsa Sandlot. Since the start of the 2021 CMWS, which was won by the Enid Majors, Oklahoma-based teams are a combined 8-2 in the bracket portion of the tournament.

Dallas Tigers 7, Tulsa Sandlot 4

Park Prater’s 2-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the decisive blow as the Dallas Tigers advanced to the third round of the Connie Mack World Series with a 7-4 Tuesday morning over the Tulsa Sandlot.

Prater’s blast over the right field wall off Tulsa’s Kamden Phillips extended the Tigers lead from just a one-run cushion into the decisive three-run margin of victory.

The victory puts the Tigers into a game on Wednesday’s championship bracket when they will face off against the Colton Nighthawks, who defeated the Mississauga Tigers by a final of 15-0.

Prater and Major Brignon each recorded a pair of RBI’s in the win, while Sawyer Farr and Brady Gray each picked up a pair of base hits in the win.

Cooper Strawn went 3 ⅔ innings for the Tigers, giving up four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out four batters before he was pulled from the mound in favor of Caleb Hoover. Strawn left the game with a slim 5-4 lead and Hoover protected it by getting Taylor Tomlin to ground out to the shortstop to end the fourth inning.

Hoover and closer Berkeley Roddy combined to throw 3 ⅓ shutout innings and allowed only a pair of hits while striking out four and walking two.

Nate Murphy led the Sandlot offense with a home run and a double, going 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of runs and two RBIs.

The Tulsa Sandlot loss drops them into the consolation bracket and a game at 1 p.m. Wednesday Ricketts Park where they’ll face elimination against the Oklahoma Express.

Colton Nighthawks 15, Mississauga Tigers 0

Logan Kelly drove in six runs with a home run and a double as the Colton Nighthawks cruised to a 15-0 run-rule victory over the Mississauga Tigers in second round action at Ricketts Park.

Kelly, a graduate from Capistrano Christian High School who has committed to Colorado State University-Pueblo, spurred the Nighthawks offense in the bottom of the first inning with a three-RBI double to left, scoring Garrett Patterson, Bryan Martinez and Ryan Kroepel. The Nighthawks scored six times in the first inning before adding three more runs in the second inning followed by another six-pack of runs in the fourth inning.

Meantime, pitcher Mason Edwards, a recent commit to the University of Southern California, threw four innings and gave up only one hit, striking out eight in a solid performance.

Kelly’s 3-run blast home run in the fourth inning was further emphasis to the win. Patterson went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs and two RBI’s.

Colton will move on to Wednesday’s third round of the championship bracket and a matchup against the Dallas Tigers.

The Tigers drop into the consolation bracket and will be in action Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. at Ricketts Park to face the Dulin’s Dodgers.

D-Bat United 9, Albuquerque Baseball Academy 7

The Dallas-based D-Bat United squad staved off elimination Tuesday afternoon at the Sports Complex, beating the Albuquerque Baseball Academy 9-7.

The loss ends the tournament run for the ABA, which posted a 2-3 record for head coach Tim Campos.

Bennett Fryman went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, recording three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored. Meantime, Ryan Alexander and J.M. Long also drove in a pair of runs to extend their time in the tournament.

Despite jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the second inning, ABA surrendered a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame, then gave up three in the bottom of the third. Lucas Lemons led the ABA offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and three runs batted in.

D-Bat will once again attempt to stave off elimination at 10 a.m. Wednesday when they face the Midland Redskins. That game is a rematch of last year’s CMWS title game, which the Redskins won by a final of 9-8.

Midland Redskins 10, NOLA Cardinals 2

The defending Connie Mack World Series champion Midland Redskins will live to play another day after eliminating the NOLA Cardinals by a final of 10-2 in a consolation round matchup on Tuesday at the Farmington Sports Complex.

Jake Daltrui was one of four Redskins batters with at least one extra-base hit. Daltrui’s solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning was one of four runs scored during that frame, effectively putting the game out of reach and helping send the Cardinals home with a record of 2-3 during tournament play.
