Film The Revolutionary Optimists

The Mancos Public Library will show the film The Revolutionary Optimists on Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m. This film is part of the Rocky Mountain PBS Community Cinema film series.

Amlan Gangula is a visionary. This lawyer-turned community activist is not only changing a neighborhood but also changing the way its youngest residents envision their lives. Filmed over the course of three and a half years, "The Revolutionary Optimists" follows Amlan and three of the children he works with through adolescence as they challenge the idea that marginalization is written into their destiny.

Planning meeting for Alzheimer walk

The Guardian Angel Walk to End Alzheimer's will have an organizational meeting on May 16 at 6 p.m. at the Calvin Denton Room, Empire Electric, to make plans for the walk this year. Refreshments will be served.

The Walk will be held on Sept. 7 at Cortez City Park. Anyone who ie interested in helping or finding out more about the organization is invited to the meeting. For more information, call Cindy Lichliter at (970) 749-2319.

Mancos Girl Scouts need yard sale donations

Mancos Girl Scouts are collecting items for a yard sale now through May 17. The yard sale will take place May 18 at 315 S. Oak in the parking lot of Valley Repair.

FireWise Home Ignition Zone workshop

FireWise of Southwest Colorado is offering a Home Ignition Zone Workshops as part of Wildfire Prevention and Education Month in May. During the 12-hour workshop, attendees will learn risk factors around their home that could cause it to burn, how to conduct an assessment, review case studies of homes that have burned due to flying embers, and more.

This is an ideal course for anyone interested in providing important wildfire risk information to residents.

Attendees will get to practice the information they learned by conducting on-site assessments on Saturday.

The workshop will be held May 17-18 at the Mancos Public Library, from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Registration is required, as space is limited. There is a $10 fee; dinner Friday night and lunch on Saturday will be provided.

Children's Kiva yard sale

The Children's Kiva Montessori School will hold a spring yard sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18.

Proceeds go to the tuition assistance program.

Yard sale for the Bridge

The Bridge Emergency Shelter will hold a yard sale at the Cortez Day Labor Center, 2405 E. Empire, on Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All profits will go to the Bridge's summer programs and the Day Labor community garden.

Native Plant Society to visit Five Springs Farm

The San Juan/Four Corners Native Plant Society will take a field trip to Five Spring Farm near Dove Creek on May 18. The farm, owned by Mike and Mona Price, features long views and spring wildflowers including bitterbrush and squaw apple.

Dairy Goat Information Day

The Four Corners Dairy Goat Breeders will hold a dairy goat information day on Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 23161 Rd. G.2 in Cortez.

Ask questions about raising dairy goats. See animals and get advice and demonstrations on care and maintenance. Multiple breeds will be represented.

Some will be available for sale. Some equipment may be available for sale.

MELC preschool celebration

On May 20, the Mancos Early Learning Center will hold a potluck for the celebration and continuation of their preschool students. The event will be held at Boyle Park, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Meeting about future of Mount Lookout Grange Hall

The public is invited to an informational meeting about the future of the Mount Lookout Grange Hall at 7 p.m. Monday, May 20, at 680 Grand Avenue, Mancos. Information about the Grange will be presented as well as an opportunity for individual to commit to membership.

Class on government contracting

Four Essential Steps to Government Contracting with Dennis Casey of the Colorado Procurement Technical Assistance Center (Co PTAC) is designed for companies registered as government contractors in the SAM system. Casey will be covering the recent changes in the new system, how to be more successful in winning bids, limitations for subcontractors, non-manufacturing rule and more. The Small Business Development Center class is free and is scheduled at the Durango Public Library program room on Wednesday, May 22, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Public plant sale to be held

The Mesa Verde Gardeners are hosting their Fifth Annual Plant Sale on Saturday, May 25, from 9 a.m. until noon in the parking lot of Front Row Seat (next to City Market) on Main St. in Cortez.

This is your chance to add some new and perhaps unusual plants to your landscape.

Plants are provided by our garden club members and by local nurseries. Perennials, annuals, herbs, houseplants and vegetables will be available.

Mesa Verde Gardeners is a group of men and women dedicated to enriching the lives of the local gardening community through education and experience in all aspects of horticulture and gardening.

Anyone interested in plants or gardening is invited to join. There are educational meetings and garden tours throughout the year.

Baby-sitting class rescheduled

A baby-sitting class originally scheduled for May 4 will be held on Friday, May 31, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Southwest Memorial Hospital Community Annex Room.

The cost is $25 per participant, and all proceeds will go to the SWMH Relay for Life Team.

The course will cover how to stay safe, feeding, playtime and how to start and safely advertise a baby-sitting business.

Students will learn how to change diapers, and identify age-appropriate toys and games, and will receive a basic first aid overview. Choking and what to do in an emergency is also covered.

Incredible Years Parenting Class

The Pinon Project will offer a series of free parenting classes beginning in June 2013 and lasting 14 weeks. The Incredible Years is a curriculum targeting parents of children birth-12 years of age. This program is for parents who are looking for more effective ways to discipline and who want to build a more positive relationship with their children. Classes will be held from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.at the Pinon Project, 300 N. Elm Street. Dinner and child care are provided. To register, contact Lara Blair or Sandra Jaburg at 564-1195. 'Starting your own business' class

The Small Business Development Center will hold a workshop for people interested in starting businesses on Thursday, June 13, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Durango Public Library. Free legal clinic

A free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the Mancos Public Library at 211 West First Street in Mancos. By computer link, volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help fill out forms, and explain the process and procedure for all areas of civil litigation, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, and civil protection orders.

Walk-ins are welcome, and everyone will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis.

Upcoming dates are June 13, July 11, August 8, September 12, October 10, November 14, December 12.

Kaleidoscope continues activities

Gentle yoga basics with Keneen is at 9 a.m. to 10:15. Yoga all levels with Keneen is at 10:30 a.m. to noon. The first class is free and drop ins are $12 and sign-in is encouraged. Register online at www.YogiKeneenDC.com.

Indoor flea market ongoing event

The Mancos Flea Market is every Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Old Hardware Store, 192 S. Main, across the bridge and just past The Absolute Bakery. Everyone is welcome to come sell, browse and buy. Spaces are available - 12'x12' for $15 for both days. Call 749-9320 for more information. Teen writing group meets on Wednesdays

Local writer Suzanne Strazza in partnership with the Mancos Public Library, will be leading a writer's group for teens ages 13-19. This group will meet at the Mancos Public Library, located at 211 W. First St., every Wednesday from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. No prior writing experience is needed. There will be no homework or required writing for this class; it is merely to explore ideas and how to get them onto paper. For more information, please call MPL at 533-7600.

Teen Computer Club at Mancos library

The first Wednesday of each month at 5 to 6:30 p.m. teens will meet in the Community Meeting Room at the Mancos Public Library to work on various computer projects. All meetings will have hands-on experience with digital devices, disassemble, build, etc. At times, they will have regional computer geeks visit. They will answer questions on specified topics, such as animation, robotics, game development hacking, etc. Questions?
