Comic Uprising returns to Dolores

Brew pub features four comedians, plus open mic session
Local comedian Derek Ryter will do stand up at the Dolores River Brewery Feb. 7 along with other comedians. Here he performs “Donald Feels the Bern” during the 2017 Snowdown Follies in Durango.

Comedy Nights returns to the Dolores River Brewery Feb. 7.

Four professional stand-up comedians will perform at 9 p.m., and there will be open mic for new or amateur comedians at 7:30 p.m. There is a $5 cover.

Headliners are Kate McLachlan, Jill Carlson, Betsy Schur, and Derek Ryter. Brian Nystrom will host the first set, and David Oakley the second.

The event is organized by Comic Uprising, a new club formed by Carlson to showcase local comedians. Sponsors include Matthew Walk-In Haircuts and Kokopelli Cabins.

McLachlan was the recent winner of the First Next Best Comic of the Four Corners.

Carlson, a local attorney and former Cortez City councilwoman, has been participating in stand-up comedy for many years. In 2017, she started the annual Four Corners Comedy Festival, and organized Comic Uprising to promote regular stand-up events in the area.

This is the third Comedy Nights at the Dolores River Brewery and the event has packed the house, said Aaron Lemay, who gave stand-up a try during the open mic session.

“It was fun, and I was not too embarrassed. Some people laughed, so I’m going to try it again,” he said.

Upcoming Comic Uprising events are:

Feb. 9, “Comedy Confessional” open mic at Balcony Bar & Grill, Durango, 8 p.m.Feb. 14 “Off With Their Heads” at Down the Rabbit Hole, Durango, 8 p.m.
