Colorado snowplow driver faces charges after fatal crash with hockey team van

Crash killed adult on van

The driver of a Colorado Department of Transportation snowplow faces nine charges after a collision with a hockey team van that killed one adult and injured a young player in late January, according to a Colorado State Patrol update on Thursday.

The crash on Interstate 70 involved a Colorado Department of Transportation snowplow and a van carrying a youth hockey team from California, as well as two additional passenger vehicles.

One adult was killed, and a youth hockey player was left in critical condition after the crash about 8:53 a.m. on I-70 in Clear Creek County.

The snowplow driver, Colton A. Wiedman, 29, faces one count of careless driving causing death, four counts of careless driving causing serious injury, three counts of careless driving causing injury and one count of failure to drive in a designated lane. All are Class 1 traffic misdemeanors.

According to a report by Colorado Public Radio, the State Patrol responded to the crash around 8:53 a.m. in the eastbound lane near Milepost 216. Troopers said the crash involved the van carrying members of the SC Flyers U12 girls hockey team and two additional passenger vehicles.

The team was in Colorado from Santa Clarita, California, for a Western Girls Hockey League tournament.

Ten people occupied the van at the time of the crash, according to the CPR report. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. One youth player was taken by helicopter to an area trauma center with critical injuries. Seven other passengers, including four children and three adults, were transported by ground to a separate local hospital, CPR said.
