City launches landscaping incentive for businesses

Cortez is launching a landscaping incentive program for existing businesses.

Businesses can receive a reimbursement for half the money spent on the project up to $1,000.

Businesses within the city limits along U.S. 160 and 491 and Colorado 145 are eligible.

The program came from the city council’s desire to beautify the town, said Dean Palmquist, parks and recreation director.

“The biggest thing is increasing the curb appeal,” he said.

Applicants must submit a landscape design and materials and plant list, according to city documents. The city will require a sprinkler or irrigation permit, but waive the fee.

Businesses are also responsible for submitting a maintenance plan. All materials and vegetation must be purchased from Montezuma County businesses and nurseries.

Projects must be completed by Sept. 30 to qualify for reimbursement. There is no deadline to apply for the program.

The project is funded by the city’s general fund, Palmquist said. Applications are available at the Cortez Recreation Center and www.cityofcortez.com in the next few weeks.
