During Tuesday’s meeting, the Cortez City Council voted to approve both candidates for to replace one youth seat on the Public Arts Advisory Committee, appointing Will Blair as a youth member and Ava Anderson as an alternate.
Both will serve a one-year term, providing a voice for young residents on matters related to protecting and enhancing arts and culture in Cortez.
“I love to see our youth getting involved, and I want both of these people because they will bring a lot to the city of Cortez,” said council member Dennis Spruell.
The Airport Advisory Board will have one open youth position, which the council agreed could also be expanded to include an alternate member, mirroring the arts board structure, considering the flourishing Young Eagles chapter in Cortez.
The group, through the Experimental Aircraft Association, invites residents ages eight to 17 to explore aviation careers and hosts rallies where children can participate in flights.
“We do have an Experimental Aircraft Association,” said City Manager Drew Sanders. “We also have a very active Civil Air Patrol cadet program here as well. So, we really think that we will have a good pool of youth to draw from.”
While Sanders said the board may take some time to get on its feet as the new airport director settles in, he said it will be a prime forum for dialogue between the city and the aviation community.
For now, Anderson and Blair will begin their roles as the newest youth representatives advising the Cortez City Council. Youth interested in applying for advisory positions can view current vacancies and submit applications through the boards and commissions page on the city’s website.
