Christmas bazaar to benefit disabled

Fees go to Southwest Center for Independence fund

It’s the season of Christmas bazaars, but a new one hosted by the Southwest Center for Independent Living is hoping raise funds for Montezuma County residents with disabilities.

“We’re creating a special fund for people in our area with disabilities that have a need for items that aren’t covered by other funding sources,” said LuAnne Herman, an independent-living specialist for the Cortez branch of the Southwest Center for Independence.

For example, certain items like toothpaste and toilet paper aren’t covered by foodstamps, and an accessory item, like a collar for a service dog, might not be covered under disability benefits, she explained.

“There’s a lot of need here, and a lack of resources,” Herman said.

The “Just in the Nick of Time Holiday Boutique,” scheduled for Dec. 19 at the Montezuma County Annex building, is still seeking vendors. Vendors can get a 6-foot table for $25, or if they are disabled themselves, tables are $15.

Table fees collected from vendors will go toward the new fund.

The Southwest Center for Independence assists disabled members of the community navigate the resources available for them, and advocates on their behalf.

For more information on securing a table at the bazaar, or to donate to the Southwest Center for Independence, contact Herman at 570-8001 or stop by the center’s office at 2409 E. Empire Street in Cortez.

The bazaar is Dec. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 103 N. Chestnut Street.
