At Round 8 of Motocross at Washougal Washington on July 19, Chase Sexton won first overall and Eli Tomac placed third, both upsetting Jett Lawrence and breaking his overall winning streak for the season.

In the first race of the 450, Jorge Prado edged out Jett Lawrence for the hole shot, and Sexton and Tomac raced slightly behind the front two in third and fourth. Sexton quickly darted by Lawrence and Prado to the lead.

Tomac put pressure on Lawrence as the racers chased after Sexton, Justin Cooper and Prado.

“This is what Eli needs to do. The last couple weekends haven’t been the normal Eli Tomac, but any time this guy gets around a lead, especially at this racetrack where he’s never finished worst than second, you know, he feels confident,” the announcer said.

Soon, both Jett Lawrence and Tomac moved past Cooper and worked on passing Prado. Jett Lawrence moved to second, and Tomac third.

“He is Lawrence’s shadow right now,” commentators said of Tomac.

Not long later, Tomac passed Jett Lawrence.

The first race ended with Sexton in first, Tomac in second and Lawrence in third.

In the second race, Hunter Lawrence took the hole shot, with Prado behind in second and in third. Sexton rode in sixth and Tomac in seventh.

Jett Lawrence moved to first. Sexton and Tomac both moved up quickly, putting them in third and fourth, respectively.

Sexton, Jett Lawrence and Hunter were bunched together in a group, with Hunter trying to pass Jett Lawrence and Sexton trying to pass Hunter Lawrence. Soon, Sexton passed Hunter Lawrence for second, but Hunter Lawrence passed him back right after.

Sexton passed again, this time for good, and set his sights on Jett Lawrence. Before Sexton could work on cutting down Jett Lawrence’s lead, a red flag showed up on the track, requiring the riders to line up and start again. The battle resumed, with Tomac going after Sexton for second, while Jett Lawrence lengthened his lead.

While Jett Lawrence placed first, Sexton’s second place win allowed him to win Washougal National overall. Tomac placed third overall.

Round 9 of the 2025 Motocross season will be held at Ironman Raceway in Crawfordsville, Indiana, on Saturday, Aug. 9.
