Anyone interested in a new charter school is invited to attend the first of three informational meetings that kick off this week.
The first Children’s Kiva Montessori Charter School informational meeting will be held at the Dolores Public Library on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Located in Cortez, the charter school would provide families from Montezuma County and beyond with a research-based educational option. The public non-profit school is slated to open next fall.
The Children’s Kiva Montessori School would serve children in grades K-6. The school is expected to grow to include a middle school program in subsequent years.
The school’s academic program emphasizes three core components: an authentic Montessori education; academic rigor through interdisciplinary science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), and community-based education.
A pending application for the charter school is currently in the hands of the Montezuma-Cortez Re-1 School District for review.
Developed by an Italian physician and educator, the Montessori educational approach emphasis independence, freedom within limits and respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical and social development.
Additional informational meetings are scheduled at the Mancos Public Library on Sept. 18, and at First National Bank of Cortez on Sept. 23. Both meetings also start at 6:30 p.m.
