This month, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a series of events, and they are inviting the public to connect with the land and its cultural heritage.
On Saturday, June 7, at 1 p.m., there will be a special lecture and guided walk at Painted Hand followed by a brew release celebration at WildEdge Brewing Collective at 5 p.m.
On Friday, June 13, the visitor center will host an evening of live jazz music featuring award-winning pianist and vocalist Chantil Dukart, “blending rhythm, landscape and culture.”
On Thursday, June 19, Tewa artist, musician and educator Ed Kabotie from Khap'o Owinge (Santa Clara Pueblo) will present Changing Times, sharing lessons of Puebloan resilience through stories and song.
The Four Corners Indigenous Art Market on Wednesday, June 28, will feature Native artists and makers showcasing their works.
Additionally, the monument has released the new Plants of Canyons of the Ancients field guide, a resource which can be used in identifying native plants across the monument and surrounding areas. The field guide was funded by the LOR Foundation and written by a “dedicated” volunteer. In the guide, readers will find information on the region’s flora.
