An unattended campfire caused a small wildfire at the Boggy Draw trailhead Friday afternoon, fire officials reported.

Crews with Dolores Fire Protection District put out the fire, which burned about a half-acre of grass and timber.

“It was going pretty good when we arrived,” said Dolores Fire Chief Mike Zion. “It is getting dry quick.”

A fire crew with the San Juan National Forest also assisted in putting out the blaze, which took almost two hours.

The Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office is investigating who had the campfire, which had been set up on the east side of the Boggy Draw parking lot, Zion said. It is illegal to leave a campfire unattended.

A smoke report came in at 4:30 p.m., and 10n firefighters with Dolores Fire arrived shortly after. The fire burned low in grass and timber east along the main Boggy Road road, scorching trees on the lower bark. Dolores responded with two brush trucks and two tankers and the forest service sent a crew and engine.
