Montezuma County Fair seeking board members

The Montezuma County Fair Board is looking for three community members who are willing to work together to organize county fair events, contests and exhibits.

Two openings are four-year terms, and one is a two-year term. Interested individuals need to submit a letter of interest to the Extension Office, 109 W. Main St., Room 102 in Cortez, before 4:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 5.

Cortez Auto Repair building Broadway shop

Cortez Auto Repair is building a larger location at South Broadway and West Seventh Street.

Owners Todd Allmon and Fred Phelps have spent 11 years on Main Street.

“We’ve been short on room for quite a while,” Phelps said.

Allmon and Phelps currently have five vehicle bays in 4,500 square feet. They expect that the additional 1,500 square feet in the new building will add three or four bays and a larger office.

The new metal building will arrive in October and should be built by December, barring unforeseen problems, Phelps said.

“So far, we haven’t had any big surprises,” he said.

After the building is finished, the shop might add a mechanic.

City incentives that abated 50 percent of the building permit fees and use taxes this year didn’t influence the timing of the new building, Phelps said, but he said they spent time finding the right location and price.

“The options of property are pretty limited,” he said.

Job training geared to senior citizens

SER Jobs For Progress, a federally funded job training program, has several openings for paid job training positions.

The Senior Community Service Employment Program partners with community organizations in providing paid job training opportunities for seniors to re-enter the workforce. Participants will gain skills necessary to gain employment in their community. Eligible applicants must be 55 years or older, unemployed and be a low-income family.

Training is available in La Plata County, Montezuma County and Archuleta County. Some of the current opportunities in La Plata County are at Habitat For Humanity, Colorado Work Force Center, Community Connections and La Plata County. Several opportunities exist in Montezuma County too.

Meeting on preservation of Montezuma Avenue

The city of Cortez and the Cortez Historic Preservation Board invite the public to a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m. at Kemper School to discuss a possible historic district on Montezuma Avenue.

After inventories of Montezuma properties in 2011 and 2012, the city of Cortez, 61 were deemed eligible for the City of Cortez Register of Historic Sites.

Twenty-two owners of the properties chose to have them listed on the register, which is an honorary designation only. Because of the number of historic properties on Montezuma, the Historic Preservation Board wants to consider forming an historic district there.

This public meeting will include a presentation by Jill Seyfarth, city historic preservation consultant. She will explain what creating an honorary historic district would entail.

Kemper School is at 620 E. Montezuma Ave. The meeting will be in the library.

Information: Call Linda Towle, chair of the Cortez Historic Preservation Board, 565-3987.
