Spanish classes for medical professionals
Southwest Colorado Community College is offering a one-semester Spanish language for medical professionals this spring.
SCCC designed the curriculum to the needs of a variety of medical professionals including unit clerks, nurse aides, nurses, doctors as well as those in allied health career fields.
The primary focus of the course will be on vocabulary needed to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients.
The 3-credit class will meet Wednesdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Mercy Medical Center.
The course runs from Jan. 21 to May 13, and is open to the public.

Bennet seeks to limit Glenwood Springs drilling
Sen. Michael Bennet’s says the Democrat will reintroduce a bill to limit energy exploration in an area south of Glenwood Springs.
Bennet will reintroduce the Thompson Divide Withdrawal and Protection Act in the wake of a new White River National Forest Service document that prohibits drilling in the area roughly bounded by the Crystal, McClure Pass and Glenwood Springs. But the forest plan can be changed in a subsequent administration, while the Bennet bill would permanently prohibit future leasing federal land in the region for energy exploration.
Many local groups argue the area’s future is in outdoor tourism rather than energy extraction. But some Republicans want energy companies to be compensated for leases they hold that they would not be able to use. Bennet’s bill would allow existing leaseholders to sell out their interests to conservation or other groups.
Mercy offers education about prediabetes
People diagnosed with prediabetes are at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Effectively managing prediabetes can help prevent diabetes.
Anyone identified as having prediabetes is invited to attend a free class by Sheena Carswell and Marge Morris. Attendees will learn how to manage prediabetes and help prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes.
The class will be held Friday, Jan. 9, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in suite 140 of the medical office building at Mercy Regional Medical Center.

More time sought to protest land swap
Environmental groups want more time to file a protest on a public land swap involving a proposed development near the Wolf Creek Ski Area.
In a Dec. 23 letter, Rocky Mountain Wild and other groups asked for a 45-day extension, saying the U.S. Forest Service missed a deadline to give them information they requested.
They also say the holidays cut into the original 45-day protest period.
The Forest Service disputes that it missed any information deadlines.
The Forest Service recommended an exchange last month that would give a developer federal land for an access road to a proposed ski village with about 1,700 residential units. In return, the developer would give the government land elsewhere.
