Help stock the Good Samaritan Center Food Pantry
A call to all gardeners: Join the fight against hunger by planing one extra vegetable plant in your garden this summer and donating the fresh produce to the Good Samaritan Center Food Pantry.
The pantry provided food to an average of 480 people a month. Donated food will help families who face food insecurity in this community.
Stop by the pantry Monday through Thursday at noon to 2 p.m. to receive a free garden maker to place next to your dedicated plant as a reminder of the people you are helping. The pantry is at 25 S. Beech St., between Blondie’s and the Post Office.
For more information or to show your support, call the pantry at 656-6424 or email Kristen Tworek at kristen.tworek@gmail.com.
Exchange students headed to Cortez fire station
The Cortez Fire District will again host seven international exchange students and their five chaperones from California on Wednesday, May 27.
This group comes through Cortez every year while visiting Mesa Verde and has made the Cortez Fire Department an annual stop. It started several years ago when they were in town during a rainstorm and stopped by City Hall to find out what was in Cortez they could visit. Since then, it has become an annual pilgrimage. During their visit, they try on the gear and learn about what it takes to be a firefighter. This year, Cortez Fire plans to perform an extrication demonstration, and, with oversight, they may partake in the exercise.
They plan to stay a night this year and hang out with firefighters, who plan to prepare dinner for them.
Hisatsinom hosts presentation on glazes
The Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society presents Brunella Santarelli on Tuesday, June 2, at 7 p.m. at the Methodist Church, 515 Park Street, Cortez, to discuss “Technological Analysis of Pueblo I Lead Glazes from the Animas-La Plata Project, Durango, Colorado.”
Brunella will discuss recent research glaze paint on pottery in the Upper San Juan region, the earliest use of glaze paint on pottery in the Southwest. Her research fills a gap in the knowledge of ceramic technology of the Southwest and examines composition, morphology and isotope signatures of the Pueblo I glaze paints in an effort to reconstruct the technology of production.
