Colo. archaeologists bring big show to FLC
The Colorado Archaeological Society's annual conference will be held Oct. 10-11 at Fort Lewis College.
Events and talks Oct. 10 will be in the FLC Ballroom. Doug Owsley of the Smithsonian Institution will serve as the dinner speaker on the topic of "Kennewick Man." The San Juan Basin Archaeological Society, in partnership with Maria's Bookshop, will have his book for sale, and he will autograph books that evening.
On Oct. 11, tentative plans include a one-day version of the Program for Avocational Archaeology Certification class on archaeological practices or a site form workshop. Other events for the day include at least one all-day field trip and a few half-day trips, as well as a speaker scheduled for that afternoon.

Dinner and a Movie set for April 4
A Dinner and a Movie Night with The Permaculture Provision Project in the Vallecito Room in the Fort Lewis Student Union is planned for Saturday, April 4.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner is served at 6 p.m., with movies to follow.
Wath a "Blood Moon" showing of some short films about permaculture and enjoy a Curry dinner and signature Spicebox Homes Spicecake.
Films include excerpts of John D. Liu's "Hope in a Changing Climate."
Suggested donation is $5 per person. The night is sponsored by the Fort Lewis Environmental Center, The Permaculture Provision Project & Spicebox Homes.
St. Onge slideshow on Everest expedition
The Mancos Public Library will host Rick St. Onge's slideshow presentation of an expedition to Mount Everest on Friday, April 10, at 6 p.m. With stunning images and personal accounts from the expedition, Rick will guide you along his journey to the top of the world.
St. Onge and an American team sponsored by the American Alpine Club embarked on the expedition to Mount Everest in 1991. Beginning in Katmandu, Nepal, the expedition joined up with a team of porters and began the more than month-long journey to the summit. They reached the summit of the highest peak in the world (29,028 feet).
St. Onge's climbing experience includes seven expedtions in the Himalayas with successful summits of Himalchuli (26,000), Island Peak (29,300), Lantang, Yala 1 and Yala2.
He and his wife, Kate, operate Galloping Husky Ranch on the outskirts of Mancos.
Spring Hoedown set for April 11
The third annual Spring Hoedown fundraiser for the Montezuma School to Farm Project is kicking off at the Mancos Opera House on Saturday, April 11, from 5 - 11 p.m.
The $6 String Band, Carute Roma Gypsy Band, and The Badly Bent will perform foot-stompin' music.
Enjoy local food, beer, wine and more than 50 Farmy, Homesteady, and locally-focused silent auction items to bid on.
Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door, with kids 17 and under free. Tickets can be purchased at Maria's Bookshop in Durango, Zuma Natural Foods in Mancos, the Dolores Food Market and FB Organics in Cortez.

Music department plans free concert
The Mancos music department presents a concert of rock, jazz and movie music in its "The Rockin' Jazzy Picture Show," at 7 p.m. in the Mancos School cafeteria.
Go dressed as a movie character, rock star, or jazz great. Prizes will be awarded for costumes at this free event, and bake sale items will be available.

Seed swap at Mancos library on April 12
On Sunday, April 12, from noon to 3 p.m., the Mancos Seed Library and SeedBroadcast will host a Seed Swap at the Mancos Public Library, 211 W. First St.
The Mancos Seed Library seeks to develop a regionally adapted food system by supporting local seed saving efforts. We do this by sharing education, resources, and local seeds with community members. The seed library is housed at the Mancos Public Library.

Hospice sets seminar on health-care plans
Hospice of Montezuma plans a free seminar on advance health-care decisions Saturday, April 18, at the Cortez Conference Center from 8 a.m. to noon. Lunch will be provided.
The seminar is part of National Healthcare Decisions Day, which is recognized on April 16, and is supported by Holiday Inn and investment advisers Edward Jones and Saybrus Partners.
Lunch will be provided.
