ASA set to begin training for volunteers
Adaptive Sports Association, a Durango-based nonprofit that provides outdoor and recreational opportunities for people with disabilities, hosts its summer volunteer trainings this month.
Volunteers are needed to assist in daily programming including whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking, cycling, camping, rock climbing, fishing and more.
Trainings are free and no experience is necessary. Volunteer raft training will be held on May 27 and June 2. Canoe and kayak training will run May 26 and June 4, and cycling training will run May 28th. Interested volunteers should call 259-0374 or visit asadurango.com to RSVP and for more information."
Fairgrounds host ennel Club shows
The Durango Kennel Club Dog Shows will be held May 15-17 at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds, 30100 U.S. Highway 160, east of Cortez.
See over 100 different breeds of dogs and watch them compete. There will also be obedience, rally and junior showmanship events.
This American Kennel Club show will start at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 8 a.m. on Sunday. Group judging (like what you see on TV) starts around 2 p.m. each day.
Admission is free and refreshments are available for purchase on-site. Sorry, only dogs that are entered are permitted on the show grounds.

Firewood permits available
As backcountry roads open for the summer, permits to cut firewood on the San Juan National Forest go on sale at agency offices and selected retail outlets.
A minimum purchase of $20 allows the bearer to gather 2½ cords of dead and downed firewood from the San Juan National Forest for personal use prior to Dec. 31. Each tag is good for one-half cord of firewood.
The appropriate number of tags must be validated and fastened to firewood before the vehicle leaves the place where the firewood was gathered.
One household may purchase permits for up to 10 cords of firewood per year for personal use. Gathering wood for resale requires a commercial permit.

Back Country Horsemen plan film
The Four Corners Back Country Horsemen will hold their monthly meeting on Thursday, May 14, 7:00 p.m. at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Guests are always encouraged to attend.
Medicine Horse Center will be showing a film called "Riding My Way Back" about a war veteran who found his way back to a good place in his life - all because of a horse.

Mancos Valley Distillery hosts Lindells
The Mancos Valley Distillery presents The Lindells and their rock on Saturday, May 30.
Doors open 5 p.m., and music starts 8 p.m., with special guest Stan Davis. Cover charge is $3.
The Lindells have been playing their rock in the West since the early 1980s. Over the past three decades, the duo has released a half-dozen records and played stages from The Steaming Bean coffee house to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. JJ Cale gave his endorsement as he waltzed across the dance floor during their opening slot soundcheck.
The two songwriters have a large original catalog of songs evoking desert dreams and high mountain heartache. Imagine Townes Van Zandt sharing a few shots with Kate Wolf backstage at a Cowboy Junkies concert.
Special guest will be longtime friend Stan Davis, of Napa, Calif. Davis has played with The Lindells, The Pond, and The Beautiful Loser Society. His songs sit right along side Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark.

Joe McMurrian performing at Sunflower
Joe McMurrian, a modern acoustic country blues and roots-based songwriter/musician who pushes the boundaries of traditional roots music and performance, will perform at the Sunflower Theatre in Cortez on Friday May 15.
The show opens with a performance by local Mancos band Sweetwater Station.
McMurrian is a powerful live performer and storyteller. He has learned from the old masters, lived the music, survived the life and carries forward a valuable tradition.
At the heart of his performance is the knack for storytelling, bringing characters- from the faceless to the legendary- to strikingly real life while freely transitioning between structure and improvisation.

Library to host quilt workshop
The Dolores Mountain Quilters' free quilting workshop "Yo-Yo Project" will be on Tuesday, May 19, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at the Mancos Public Library.
?This will be a hand-sewing project to make yo-yo's, tiny circles of fabric, gathered at the edges and sewn together to create a three-dimensional effect. If possible, please bring fabric, needle, thread, thimble and scissors. Limited fabric and supplies are available. Teens are welcome, and children under 13 can join with an adult.

Youth Farmers Market continues
Youth Farmers Market at the Mancos school campus continues for two more Wednesdays. Shop the sale, on the front lawn of the elementary school, Wednesdays, May 13 and 20 from 3:45 to 4:15 p.m. Seeds and plants will be on sale, all cared for and packaged by Mancos elementary and middle school students. Proceeds from these items benefit the Montezuma School to Farm Project and the Mancos School Garden Program.
Also participating is the Mancos Middle School's Arts and Crafts class, selling student-made plant labels to bring beauty to your garden. Proceeds from these items will sustain future Arts and Crafts class projects.

Water discussion on Tuesday May 19
The Mancos Town Board will have a special meeting to discuss water rights on May 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Mancos Town Hall.
Bob Becker will discuss the history of the town and its water rights.
