Lewis Arriola Fire hosts open house
The Lewis Arriola Fire Department will host an open house at its new fire station in Arriola on June 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tour the fire station, see the trucks and meet the firefighters. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be served.
The fire station is on Road S, just east of U.S. Highway 491.
Ferris Campground opening delayed
The Dolores Ranger District is in the process of removing hazardous trees from the Ferris Campground, which will delay the campground’s opening in June.
Ferris Campground is off Forest Road No. 504 on the Dolores River.
Standing dead and diseased box elders will be removed to protect the safety of visitors. Closure signs will be posted, and the campground will be opened as soon as the trees are removed.

Incredible Years series to start
A 12-week series that follows the Incredible Years Curriculum, which teaches positive discipline strategies, and provides support from fellow parents will be offered in Cortez.
The series is geared to caregivers with children ages 2 to 10 years.

League of Women Voters wins awards
The League of Women Voters of Montezuma County received an award “for reaching out to the community at large” during the Colorado League’s bi-annual Convention in Boulder on May 16 and 17.
Fifteen local leagues from across Colorado were represented. Eleanor Kuhl was the voting delegate representing Montezuma County.
Four awards were given from the Membership and Leadership Development Program of the Colorado League. Kuhl was recognized for accomplishments and addressed the Convention concerning programs of the county League in recent months, including the educational program on human trafficking held May 14. At least 100 people attended the information session on human trafficking, which was organized by the United Methodist Women, the League of Women Voters of Montezuma County, and the Victim Response Unit Coordinator of the Cortez Police Department.
Another action at the State Convention involved the adoption of a study for 2015 of the LWVCO Health Care Position to include behavioral health. The study will help to expand the existing health care position with a section on youths, as well as a new section on behavioral health and the homeless.
The next meeting of the League of Women Voters of Montezuma County is Saturday, June 13 at 9 am at the Ponderosa Restaurant in Dolores.
SuperNatural hero coming to library
The Cortez Public Library hosts Play-Ground Theatre on Wednesday, June 17, at 2 p.m. in the library’s next segment of its summer Family Entertainment Series.
Mia and Jeff of the Play-Ground Theatre present “Green Scene,” introducing the world’s first organic superhero, SuperNatural. SuperNatural and sidekick Sprout are here to save the planet from Toxic Waste’s Pollution Potion.
The show also highlights lovable recycling pirates Captain Underwear and Long John Slipper, and kids get a chance to show off their knowledge of sustainable themes in The Green Game Show.

For Pets’ Sake needs Pennies for Pets
For Pets’ Sake Humane Society is seeking help from the community for their Pennies For Pets fundraiser on Saturday morning, July 4 at the Cortez Farmers Market, 109 W. Main St.
