Book giveaway at public library
Join the Mancos Public Library and Durango Nature Studies for an event celebrating the One Book 4 Colorado initiative on April 17th, at 10:30 a.m., at the Mancos Public Library located at 211 W. First St.
The winning book this year is Grumpy Bird by Jeremy Tankard. Copies of the book in both English and Spanish will be given away to all 4-year-olds at the event.
Klancy Nixon, program coordinator for Durango Nature Studies, will be the guest reader and will also give a short talk on bird adaptations as well as bring several stuffed birds from the Durango Nature Studies collection.

The Mancos Public Library will join libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week from April 13 through April 19.
The library hopes to collect the community members' stories about their experience with the library.
"Service to the community has always been the focus of the library," said Lee Hallberg, director of the Mancos Public Library.
"While this aspect has never changed, libraries have grown and evolved in how they provide for the needs of every member of their community."

Library plans screening of 'Medora'
The Mancos Public Library presents an advanced screening of Medora April 17 at 6 p.m.
The film follows the down-but-not-out Medora, Ind., Hornets varsity basketball team over the course of a season, capturing their stories both on and off the court. Riding a brutal losing streak when the film begins, the team's struggle to compete bears eerie resemblance to the town's fight for survival. An in-depth, deeply personal look at small town life,Medora is also a thrilling, underdog basketball story and an inspiring tale of a community refusing to give up hope despite the brutal odds stacked against them.
While the film follows this particular team in this particular place, ultimately Medora is a film about America, and the thousands of small towns across the country facing the same fight.
Movie Mondays at the library
The Mancos Public Library shows films for children 8 years old and older almost every Monday at 4 p.m. The films are free and children under 8 years old need to be accompanied by an adult. On April 7 the library will show Free Birds. No film will be shown April 14. On the April 21 the library will present Winnie the Pooh. Walking with Dinosaurs will be presented on April 28.
Steward program available for farmers
The Colorado Master Steward program in Montezuma County offers a short course to help farmers create a sustainable environment and increase production.
The nine-week course helps to:
Improve soil structure and fertility.
Maintain healthy pastures with fewer weeds.
Understand ways to reduce soil erosion.
Maximize use of irrigation water and promote water quality in rivers.
Maintain defensible space from wildfires.
Classes are Wednesdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. April 23 through June 18 at the First National Bank of Cortez. Registration fee is $120 per property.
