BLOOMFIELD – In what was both a celebration and a coronation Monday night at Bloomfield High School, the Bobcats football team took a moment to look at the importance of the program to the surrounding community.

Coaches, players and administrators from BHS gathered in the school’s auditorium to hand out championship rings for the team’s efforts in winning the Class 4A state football title in November. The Bobcats defeated Silver by a final of 13-7, giving the team its first state title since 1966.

Head coach Mike Kovacs thanked the players and assistant coaches who helped guide the team to a 12-1 record and a state title and also thanked the community as a whole.

“They’ve been so excited and supportive to the team,” Kovacs said. “You see that spirit in the businesses and everyone around town. The whole city has been absolutely fantastic and amazing.”

Players each received championship rings, and posed for photos with the New Mexico Activities Association’s “Blue Trophy,” which goes to state champions in all high school sports.

“The accomplishment of finally getting it done feels amazing and complete to a season,” Kovacs said. “I have been and always will be so proud of this team.”

BHS athletic director Ben Tensay, who received a ring during the ceremony, also praised the community for their support of the program.

“Tonight was a way to show the city and the community that this state championship is also for them,” Tensay said. “The support we receive for all of Bloomfield athletics has been incredible.”

The Bobcats football team is already preparing for the 2023-24 season, which will open Aug. 18 at home against St. Pius.
