Thank you, Mr. Rick Corbett, (Letters, Journal, Nov. 14) for your well-reasoned, intellectual statistical response to my earlier Argentina post (Letters, Journal, Oct. 29). This is exactly what I’ve been hoping for in the Age of Trump – civil discourse rather than suppression of dissent.
Since I first wrote, other developments have unfolded: USA regional beef councils have announced that Mr. Trump has “stuck it to them,” and the president himself has implicated USA ranchers for high beef prices – even as producers correctly argue they have no margin under our current economic regime. It raises an uncomfortable question: Could our president be pandering to angry consumers at the expense of his loyal MAGA supporters?
I’ve been buying local grass-pastured beef directly from producers by the half for many years. It’s a fine product. But I do have to agree with our president that prices are too high, and that lower-priced Argentine beef imports make sense.
During my international travels, Argentine beef was a staple, and it stacks up well against anything produced here.
It’s been a nice time, and I wish our local ranchers well in their endeavors.
