Bear breaking into campsites trapped near Haviland Lake

Colorado Parks and Wildlife asks public to report bear interactions
Colorado Parks and Wildlife trapped a bear believed to be causing problems in the Haviland Lake area north of Durango.

A bear that was breaking into campsites at Haviland Lake, north of Durango, was trapped Thursday night, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The bear was reportedly breaking into coolers and finding food left unsecured by campers.

CPW officials were able to trap the bear, and then sedate and tag him.

“Luckily, the bear activity was reported to us before this bear became too dependent on human food sources,” the agency posted to Facebook. “He is currently awake and on his way to a new home, away from humans, where he will hopefully live a long life in the wild.”

People who have an interaction with a bear, or even a sighting, may report it to 247-0855.
