A balloon launch commemorated the birthday of Zachariah Juwaun Shorty, who was found shot to death on July 25, 2020, in a remote area of Nenahnezad, New Mexico.
Shorty was born May 5, 1997. The memorial was held May 5 at Brook Haven Park in Farmington, around the corner from Journey Inn on Airport Drive, which was the last place Shorty was seen alive on July 21, 2020.
Shorty’s mother, Vangie Randall-Shorty, hosted the celebration of his life. She was also one of the organizers of the National Day of Awareness rally earlier that day in Berg Park.
Randall-Shorty stood quietly weeping beside her partner, Randall Plummer, as the balloons soared into the clouds.
There is a $10,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of those responsible for his death.
Those who may have information about the death of Shorty, or the whereabouts of any other missing or murdered Indigenous person, are asked to contact the Farmington New Mexico FBI office at (505) 326-5584. Tips may remain anonymous.
