Journalist and author Michael Kodas will present “Learning to Live With Megafires” on Oct. 12, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Powerhouse Science Center.
Kodas will share insights about the causes and consequences of megafire, gained from interviews with firefighters, incident command teams, resource managers, policymakers, scientists and citizens. His investigation took him from a season on a Rockies fire crew to tragedies in Australia and Arizona and record-breaking fire seasons in Colorado.
In his book “Megafire: The Race to Extinguish a Deadly Epidemic of Flame,” he describes the rising phenomenon of increasingly widespread and destructive forest fires from the perspective of the people who have experienced them. In the wake of the 416, Burro and Plateau fires, the presentation continues a conversation about how communities recover from the impacts.
The event starts with food and beverages and a meet-and-greet from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino Del Rio in Durango. After that, Kodas will present his findings and a Q&A period facilitated by Dr. Julie Korb, fire ecologist at Fort Lewis College. The event will conclude with a book signing.
