ATV crash outside Silverton prompts rescue mission

One person required helicopter transport, authorities say
An ATV crash Thursday required a helicopter transport for one of three people injured.

An off-highway vehicle rollover crash on a high mountain pass outside Silverton last week resulted in a search and rescue effort that required helicopter transport.

DeAnne Gallegos, spokeswoman for San Juan County, said on Thursday evening authorities received a report that an OHV rolled over on Stoney Pass, a popular backcountry road for off-highway vehicles and Jeeps east of Silverton.

As a result of the crash, two adults and one minor were reported injured, Gallegos said.

At the time, most emergency personnel in Silverton were attending the third annual Mountain Medicine Symposium. Crews with San Juan County Search and Rescue, San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, San Juan County/Silverton Ambulance and San Juan County/Silverton Fire department responded to the scene.

Ultimately, one of the injured people required a helicopter transport by Flight for Life. The other two injured people were taken via ambulance.

Gallegos said the injured patients’ current condition is not known at this time. She said their identifies have not been released. She had no further information as of Saturday afternoon.
