Annual Parade of Lights begins, with a special guest

A 1958 Panhead Harley-Davidson sparkles with parade lights for the Chrome Mafia float in a previous year’s Parade of Lights march down Main Street in Cortez.
Spoiler alert: Santa will make a surprise arrival this year

Look out for a new addition to this year’s Parade of Lights, as Santa switches up his regular mode of transportation.

A Classic AM helicopter will deliver the embodiment of Christmas himself to the corner of Maple and Main streets to kickstart the parade.

This holiday season, parade host Four Corners Board of Realtors hoped to inspire Cortez to turn outward, and focus on instilling kindness in others without recognition.

The chosen theme of the 32nd annual December event “All Santa’s Helpers,” reflected this goal.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Mancos

Stan Pierce, 50-year local Realtor and this year’s grand marshal, inspired the parade theme: “All Santa’s Helpers,” said Terry McCabe, parade organizer and Four Corners Board of Realtors member.

Pierce, the elder member on the Four Corners Board of Realtors – and who McCabe describes as the patriarch of the organization, is selfless in his endeavors to help others, she said.

In line with this year’s theme, the judges of the floats will be members of nonprofits. A first-, second- and third-place prize, sponsored by Four Corners Board of Realtors members and affiliates, will be awarded to floats in each of the three parade categories – commercial, nonprofit and other, which includes individuals, school and clubs.

Judges, stationed at the north corner of Market and Main streets, will evaluate participants for music and lights, creativity, theme development and workmanship.

Floats will line up on South Maple Street and will travel along the north side of Main Street to North Park.

The north side of Main Street will be closed for parking.

Last year, there were about 65 entries, and the year before, almost 80, she said.

Mass Media will livestream the event.
