America’s war name game

We’ve just launched a bombing campaign against Iran and named it “Operation Epic Fury” – this, after Iran allegedly lost its nuclear capabilities for six months in the so-called “Operation Midnight Hammer.”

The United States has long brandished its military might with great fanfare. Remember “Operation Desert Storm,” “Operation Desert Fox” and “Operation Desert Shield”? All launched in answer to threats – including, notoriously, the response to the Sept. 11 attacks on a country that had nothing to do with them.

I beam with national pride, covered in patriotic chills, over the cool and macho names we give our half-baked military escapades. With the newly rebranded “Department of War,” could “Operation Armageddon” be far behind?
