Adventure Club child care, which takes place daily at the Cortez Recreation Center, still has openings for winter and spring in 2024.

Kaylee Uptain, who works with Adventure Club, said it is “a great opportunity for after-school child care.”

The program operates Monday through Thursday from after school until 5:30 p.m. and all day Friday – 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for students ages 5-10 years old.

Children who are enrolled in the program get picked up by staff members from their local school or bus stops before taking them to the Rec Center.

The program kicks off each afternoon with a snack and help with homework before the children get to play and do other activities at the Rec Center.

“We give all the kids a little while to work on their homework and read books and stuff like that, and then we will either play fun games and activities or we’ll do different things here in the Rec Center like go on the rock wall, open gym, play basketball, foosball, racquetball, anything in the Rec Center,” Uptain said.

On Fridays, when students spend all day with Adventure Club Childcare, they do activities such as field trips, swimming, movie theater, bowling alley, the Cortez Public Library and more. On snowy days, Uptain said they may play in the snow for a little while and on warm days they will go to the local parks to play.

The capacity for Adventure Club each day is 20 students, but they still have some openings. Friday is their busiest day.

Those who are interested in signing up for the Adventure Club can find registration packets at the front desk of the Rec Center. Forms must be fully filled out with the student’s birth certificate and immunization records per state regulations.

The after-school program Monday through Thursday is $12 a day and Fridays are $18 a day. Those who bulk register, however, will receive discounts.

A full week is $55 ($11 in savings) and a full month is $200 ($64 in savings.)

Uptain said they are discussing on raising the age limit to 12 in the future, but as of right now, the age limit is 10 years old.

In the summer, Adventure Club turns to Playground Days, where 50 children ages 5-10 years old can register from the first week of June through the first week of August.

In the summertime, field trips can take place farther away, such as the Cortez outdoor pool, Medicine Horse, Lake Nighthorse, Durango and more.

Additionally, Uptain shared that in 2024, Adventure Club will be offering child care during school breaks and some holidays such as spring break and Thanksgiving break.
