A way forward to fiscal sanity

Props to KSJD for its County Commissioner candidate interviews. Vapid prevarications as they are, it's enlightening. No one wants to drive a stake into the ground and take a hard position. Instead, it's the same old wonky blathering: “Vote for me and I'll set you free!”

I have a proposal. Let's have every county elected official, appointed official, and employee who has any discretion over spending lay out what's a mandated expense and what's discretionary – not the endless published unintelligible columns, but the big numbers in a comprehensible format. Then let's eliminate discretionary spending, much the same as our working households have to do in managing our very own expenses in these hard times.

Of course, this creates winners and losers. Can any of our officials, current or aspiring, take the heat?
