Beginning March 12, “March Madness” was imposed on us once again.

No, not that March Madness; the March Madness called daylight savings time. This insanity began again in 1966. The enhanced version that we now suffer with began in 2007. Unfortunately, this life disrupter will not end this year until Nov. 5.

Numerous scientific and economic studies have proven that daylight savings time saves absolutely nothing. In fact, it leads to increased traffic accidents, both vehicular and pedestrian. It reduces academic performance, at least for youngsters through their teens. A recent study showed that it reduces sales at brick-and-mortar stores, especially in the fall.

Obviously, some people must like it as it is in effect in 70 countries and 48 of the 50 states. For that reason, it is helpful to be reminded of when it begins and ends each year. Many papers do that. For some reason the Cortez Journal is not one of them. Perhaps the editor does not think that this matter is worth mentioning. If so, then that may help explain why an ever-increasing number of readers ignore the Cortez Journal.
