Bears Play Cortez Saturday; Dropped by Nucla 26-2

The gridiron gang from Dolores will be facing a Cortez JV team on the home field this Saturday, Sep. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in what will probably be one of the hardest fought games of the season.

Despite their defeat by Nucla last Friday, the Bears are in good spirits this week, determined to down their old rivals, the Cortez Panthers.

Summit Ridge Womens Club to Paint Mail Boxes

The Summit Ridge Womens club is starting a community service project, which will be to paint names on rural mailboxes in the Summit Ridge area. Letters will be mailed next week to residents of the Ridge describing what they plan to do.

There has been several times when emergency vehicles have had considerable delay trying to find a certain location or address; as well as visitors just trying to find a certain family with uncertain directions. It is hoped this will help alleviate some of the problem.

County Facing Lawsuit

At the county commissioners meeting this week Montezuma County Commissioners were served with a summons informing them the county is being sued by Homer and Georgia Boyd asking for a sum of $245,000. Also named in the suit are the City of Cortez and several police officers. The suit asks for damages for an incident several months ago when Boyd and his pickup were commandeered by men involved in a jail break.

Brenda Johnson New Rainbow Head

Brenda Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Johnson will be installed as Worthy Advisor of Dolores Assembly No. 50, Order of Rainbow for Girls at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21 at the Dolores Masonic Lodge.

Miss Johnson's theme will be "Happiness Is.", her colors blue and white, her symbol the Bluebird, and her honor stations Faith and Fidelity.

Certificates of Appreciation

Certificates of appreciation from the town board were presented last week at the town park by Mayor V. T. Boyd to the persons who have worked all summer to make the park one of the nicest places in Dolores. Receiving the awards are Clay and Peg Glaser, and Howard and Lucille Stewart.

Winner at State Fair Dress Revue

Mary Porter, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Porter of Lewis, Colorado, placed second in the State Dress Revue in the National Report Form section. She was also in the top fifteen in the Dress Revue division.

Bonding Rep. at School Board Meeting Thurs.

James Anderson, the bonding representative of Hanifer, Imhoff and Samford, Inc. of Denver will attend the regular meeting of the Dolores School District Re4A Board of Education to be held on Sept. 18 at 8 p.m.

Jeep Tours Planned by Neighboring Communities

Six San Juan communities have formed a consortium to plan a series of six 4-wheel drive tours of ghost towns, pioneer roads and abandoned railroad grades in their region as a Centennial-Bicentennial project.

Heavy Rain Hits Area

A display of thunder, lightening and rain swept the area early Thursday morning with hail reported in some areas. The rain fell hard for about two hours then slacked off and by mid morning the sun was shining with scattered clouds. Electrical service in Dolores was disrupted a short time by the storm.

Accident Report

At 12:45 on Sept. 6 a parked pickup belonging to Clyde Steel of Dolores was struck on the left side by an east bound 1971 Plymouth driven by James Phillip Lopez of Cortez. The Steel pickup was parked on the north side off the traveled portion of a private road four miles southwest of Dolores at the time of the accident.
