Greg Majors was named the outstanding athlete of the year, with judging done on academic plus athletic prowess. Majors is the son of Mrs. Mary Ruth Majors.

The Del Rio Hotel, Lounge and Restaurant have a new owner announced this week when Nick Wahl of Durango purchased the property from Mr. and Mrs. Woody Woodard, who have owned it for several years. Wahl predicted that development in Telluride and the Dolores Project coming along would find things booming here in five to six years.

Rico News & Views by Charles Engel: A proposed Storm Peak Wilderness was discussed. Town Board members expressed their opposition to a change in the use of the lands in question. A letter to the Forest Service recommended that the acreage be retained under its present multi-use status.

Montezuma County will see two oil well tries with one just west of Pleasant View by Pennzoil Co. on Norton Property. The other will be by Michael P. Grace and is on property about 20 miles down McElmo Canyon.

Bob Herman of Pleasant View asked the Montezuma County Commission to have roads looked at in that vicinity. During an inspect by commissioners last week, damage amounting to about $30,000 was found. It had been caused by heavy trucks, and the county will seek reimbursement from the trucking company.

Bob Page reported on the loss of the bridge in Lost Canyon due to flood waters.

Photo caption: Look close and you can see where the West Fork road used to be. Right there straight ahead through that pile of mud, rocks and trees. The big slide came down a week ago last Sunday and is expected to be opened up later this week with the aid of a dragline and use of timbers to make a roadbed that will hold up. Residents of the Fish Creek area and Dunton have been stranded above the slide, which is just north of the West Dolores Campgrounds.

Open letter to the citizens of Rico and School District A: "The election is over and voter turnout was very light. Walter and I could not make it because of a huge mud slide that has had us isolated for over a week. All of which certainly points up a fact: Due to distance and communication difficulties, you as concerned citizens and I as your 'elected' representative will have to make a very real effort to have our thoughts and feelings made known to one another."

Wally Henes has been a houseguest at the Terry Johnson home so he will be able to attend school.
