At the invitation of the county commissioners of Montezuma and Dolores counties, the Bureau of Reclamation will conduct a pilot research study of the land suitability in the Dolores Project area. The Dolores Project, which was authorized by Congress in 1968, will divert water from the Dolores River to cities and onto lands in Montezuma and Dolores counties.

Funeral services were held June 18 in Las Alamitos, Calif., for Dennis Gould, who passed away in a hospital there June 15. He will be remembered here by a few of the old timers surviving, as he worked on the Rio Grande Southern as a brakeman from about the years 1924 to 1945. During slack period on the Southern, he worked as a miner in Rico.

Rico News & Views by Charles M. Engel: Rico has a licensed guide service. "Rico Scenic Tours and Outfitters" have horses for hire, four-wheel vehicles for scenic mountain tours, and they cater to pack trips, drop camps and trail rides. The new service is in the first year of operation by Robert Fahrion.

Telluride: The city's water system is faltering in the face of the large spring runoff this year with the San Miguel overflowing its bank and Cornet Creek wandering around town. The main water line plugged somewhere and it was learned that it would be an undermined length of time before water service could be restored.

Ouray: Richard Burnett, 31, a Camp Bird Mine surface employee, was killed last Wednesday while welding on a job at the mine.

Monticello: Volunteer efforts to spot a lost plane resulted in disaster and the death of the pilot of a single-engine Civil Air Patrol search plane which went down Sunday, June 10. James Potter, 23, the spotter in the plane, was able to walk away from the wreckage approximately 10 miles to Highway 163. The original lost plane has not been found yet.

The silver wedding anniversary of Dr. and Mrs. E.G. Merritt of Dolores was observed with a dance held Wednesday of this week at the Mary Blake Hall in Cortez. A seven-tiered anniversary cake graced the serving table and a four-piece orchestra provided music for the event.

Yellow Jacket: Nearly three inches of rain have fallen this month, but most of the farmers are through planting. A few still lack a couple days or so. The nights have been unpleasantly cool, but so far around our place there hasn't been any frost.
