Cortez Police Department

The Cortez Police Department’s 2024 Police Citizens Academy will begin on March 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The academy will continue meeting each Tuesday evening for 6 weeks through April 9. The academy will be held at the Cortez Police Department at, 608 North Park St. in Cortez.

Each session provides different information including police policy, reports, crime scenes, arrest control, extreme risk protection order information, department training videos, and training with less lethal options including tasers. Each night will consist of an hour of classroom and an hour of hands-on training and fun reality-based decision-making scenarios.

“We hope that this will be a great learning experience for the community and our staff,” the department said in a news release. “We are excited for attendees to experience a taste of how the Cortez Police Department operates.”

There is no cost for this class, but enrollment is limited to 12 residents providing the opportunity for each person, each night, to complete the scenarios.
