FARMINGTON – The Miyamura High School baseball team earned the District 1-4A championship, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Bloomfield 6-5 in a thriller Thursday afternoon at Miyamura High School.

Seth Torres’ single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in Jaimeer Beyale, breaking a 5-5 tie and giving the Patriots the second district title in three seasons.

Dylan Joines drove in three runs for the Patriots, including the game-tying run earlier in the seventh inning when he hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Isaiah Martinez after he led off the inning with a triple.

Bloomfield had a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, thanks to Francisco Rivera, who drove in a pair of runs in the second inning and also was effective on the mound. Rivera entered the fifth inning allowing only two hits, but found trouble allowing three straight Patriots hitters to get aboard before Joines drove in both Martinez and Blaise Chavez to tie up the game at 3-3.

Drew Perez came in to relieve Rivera on the hill, but he promptly gave up a run-scoring double by Beyale which scored Joins and gave Miyamura a 4-3 lead.

The Bobcats reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh inning when Rivera hit a double to right field, scoring McKell Colbert and Trae Woods before the dramatic conclusion.

The Patriots win evens the district series between the two teams. Bloomfield beat Miyamura by a final of 11-4 at Bobcat Stadium on April 15.

“The players are going to be fine. They left the field angered by the loss, but driven for the next leg,” said Bloomfield head coach Jim Belveal.

Miyamura (12-11, 8-2 District) will be headed to the New Mexico Activities Association’s Class 4A state baseball tournament for the seventh straight season. The Patriots advanced to second round of the tournament last season before being eliminated by Los Alamos.

Ranked 12th by MaxPreps in Class 4A, the Patriots will await seeding in the state tournament when the NMAA announces tournament brackets on Sunday. The top 16 teams in each classification advance to the state tournament. Fans can follow the bracket and seeding process online through the NMAA’s website at www.nmact.org.

Bloomfield finishes the regular season with a record of 17-6 (7-3 District 1-4A). Ranked 10th in Class 4A heading into the week, the Bobcats will also wait to hear their fate for the state tournament which begins on Friday, May 5. Last season, the Bobcats were eliminated by Grants in the first round of the tournament, which consists of a three-game series.

In other regular season finales played Thursday across San Juan County, Aztec rolled to an 11-0 shutout win at home over Kirtland Central.

Pitcher Justin Bixler tossed a complete-game shutout, throwing five innings and striking out Broncos hitters, allowing only one hit and four walks to earn the victory. The win improves the Tigers record to 14-10 on the season (6-4 District 1-4A) and likely assures the team of a spot in the upcoming state tournament.

Aztec won the district title last year, advancing to the Class 4A semifinals before losing to Albuquerque Academy.

“We obviously didn’t finish where we wanted to in District,” said Tigers coach Eli Wyatt. “But this win showed the potential we’ve had all season.”

The Tigers lost back-to-back games last week but finished the regular season with a pair of wins. Ranked 13th in the state at Class 4A, Wyatt hopes the team is back on track heading to the state tournament.

“Winning the mental game is more than half the battle, especially under pressure,” Wyatt said. “We are ready for the playoffs and hope this will be the fire we need to get hot at the right time.”

Bixler scored a run and drove in a run for the Tigers, which scored four times in the first inning before adding five more runs in the third and finishing with a pair of runs in the fourth inning.

Jacob Prada-Johnson led the Aztec offense with a pair of home runs, driving in four runs while Sylas Hengst scored three times.

Kirtland Central (12-14 overall, 4-6 District) is ranked 20th in Class 4A by MaxPreps and will likely miss the state tournament.

The Shiprock High School baseball team wrapped up its regular season with an 8-2 win on the road over Gallup.

Pitcher Braeden Atcitty earned the victory, throwing a complete game and striking out five Bengals hitters and allowing only a pair of walks and six hits.

Logan Pioche scored three times while going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, while Atcitty and Holden Etcitty each drove in a pair of runs to pace the Chieftains offense.

Shiprock wraps up the season with a record of 9-11 (4-6 District 1-4A). Gallup closes out the campaign with a record of 3-20 (1-9 District).
