CSU issues Army cutworm warning

The Army cutworm preys on wheat, alfalfa and other crops, and outbreaks have occurred this year across Southwest Colorado.

The last significant invasion of Army cutworms in the area occurred more than 10 years ago, but infestations have been identified this year in both La Plata and Montezuma counties.

“Now is the time to look for them,” warned Tom Hooten, Colorado State University’s Montezuma County extension director.

Hooten said the larger the larvae, the more difficult they are to control and the more they consume. He suggested checking for damaged plants or abnormal growth, including inspecting the soil around plants.

“Army cutworms can be especially thick on rangeland,” Hooten said. “The worst infestations may be above 5,500 feet in elevation.”

Army cutworm larvae avoid sunlight, feeding at night or on overcast days, making populations difficult to see, Hooten advised. The pest are nearly two inches long when fully grown, light gray with lighter markings and a pale stripe running down the back. The cutworms typically curl into a “C” with heads touching their tails when disturbed.
