Cortez Police

Thursday, May 2

Police responded to the Cortez Rec Center in reference to property damage. About four years ago, the Rec Center was broken into from a roof access. Since that incident, the roof has been secured with a padlock from the inside. Police noticed that the roof access had been tampered with, and it looked like somebody had struck the latch with another object, bending the latch. There was also a smashed solar panel. The damage will cost $457 to fix.

Friday, May 10

Two men were arrested at the Sleeping Ute Apartments. They were intoxicated and the renter wanted them removed from the apartment. One man was in violation of a protection order and the other had a warrant. As the police escorted the men to the police car, they were swearing at young children, calling them names. The men were also threatening the officer and the officer’s family and were being very uncooperative. Finally, after arriving at the jail, the men were placed into custody.

Saturday, May 18

Police reported to a local car dealership about slashed tires. When police arrived, a tire had a very deep gash in it. A razor blade was left in the tire. There was also a five-hour energy drink sitting on the rim of the tire. Both objects were taken to the crime lab for fingerprinting. The damages were about $310.

Saturday, May 18

A call was made to 911 about a woman having a seizure in her car in McDonald’s parking lot. When police arrived, the woman was still having the seizure. After several moments, the woman became coherent and told police she had been “dusting” from an aerosol can. The police located the 12-ounce aerosol can of “Ultra Duster” The woman was given a summons for abusing toxic vapors. The woman who called 911 said that the woman “dusting” had a small seizure and then continued to inhale the contents and then that’s when she began having another seizure. The medics arrived, and the woman refused medical treatment.

Wednesday, May 22

A woman had called police on her boyfriend, who had hit her and thrown her down on the bed. He then got a butcher knife and threatened to kill himself if she was going to leave him. She said that he was upset because she still used her ex-husband’s last name. Her boyfriend said that she must still be in love with her ex-husband if she was going to keep his last name. The woman was willing to press charges, and the man was arrested for assault.

Thursday, May 16

An Empire Electric employee contacted the sheriff’s office because a man was tampering with his electrical meter after his electricity had been turned off because of non-payment. When officers arrived at the residence, the lock to the meter was laying on the ground along with the hasp that covers the lock and the sleeves that keep electricity from flowing. There was also a generator in front of the residence and extension cords were leading to the entertainment center in the living room. After several attempts were made to contact the man living at the house, police were finally able to contact him at his place of work. Police explained to the man that he was getting a summons for tampering with a utility meter because of the fact that no one else has a vested interest in restoring his power but him.

Saturday, May 19

A man was pulled over for having no license plate light. While speaking with an officer, he said he didn’t have a driver’s license because it his was revoked. The man also said that he hadn’t driven his vehicle in three years and that he was just going to go get some friends and then he needed to get home to his disabled girlfriend. The officer noticed the man’s pupils were enlarged and he was having body tremors. The man admitted to smoking marijuana two hours before being pulled over but that he was not high because he smokes marijuana frequently. The man was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance. The man was transported to jail, where he chose to submit to a urine test. The man’s urine was positive for marijuana, methamphetamine and amphetamine. The man was arrested for driving with a revoked license and driving under the influence of drugs.

Thursday, May 23

An officer saw a man standing on the side of the road waving his arms trying to get people to stop. The officer stopped and made contact. The officer could smell an intoxicating beverage on him and asked how old he was. The man said he was 18 and had not been drinking. The officer noticed that the man kept putting his hands in his pockets and asked him if he had any weapons on him. The man said he did not. The officer asked if was allowed to pat him down and that he had the right to refuse. The man said that the officer could pat him down but not to go into his pockets. The officer asked him why, and the man said because he had a knife in his pocket. While the officer was searching the man he found a knife, a bottle of whiskey and a marijuana pipe. The man was then given a summons with the following charges: Possession and consumption of alcohol under 21, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sunday, May 26

A driver in a maroon Toyota was pulled over for not using a turn signal. After contacting the driver, the officer smelled an unknown intoxicating beverage. The driver’s eyes were bloodshot and watery. The officer asked the driver if she had any alcoholic beverages. She said she had two shots two hours before. She said she was 20 years old. Dispatch revealed that her license was revoked for a previous alcohol offense and the woman was taken into custody and was transported to the Montezuma County Jail where the breath test showed a result of .187.
