Fair board seeks new members

The Montezuma County Fair Board is looking for three community members who are willing to work together to organize county fair events, contests, and exhibits in order to make the fair a community event.

Two of the openings are four-year terms, and one opening is a two-year term. Interested individuals need to submit a letter of interest to the Extension office which is at 109 W. Main, Room 102 in Cortez no later than 4:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17, 2014.

Nov. 4 election is around the corner

Mail-in ballots for the Nov. 4 election will be sent to registered voters to the address on their voter registration beginning the week of Oct. 12.

To update your address or to register, visit GoVoteColorado.com or the county clerk, 140 W. Main St., Suite 1, Cortez.

Voters may drop off completed ballots at the clerk’s office or sign the return envelope, add postage and mail it.

Montezuma County will have three polling centers where people can register, update records, request a replacement ballot, and vote – at the clerk’s office, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24 and Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and at the Dolores and Mancos libraries on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Signed ballots must be returned by 7 p.m. on Nov. 4 to be counted.

Sonja Horoshko and Ed Singer will involve the public in their creative work at a free program on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Far View Lodge Library.

While serving as Mesa Verde National Park’s artists in residence from Sept. 29 through Oct. 12,

Their project will be formatted in letters they send to their grandsons containing Singer’s place-based drawings and Horoshko’s in situ narrative recording sites, experiences, and museum research. The artists will invite their Oct. 9 program participants to replicate the artists’ project by creating and sending a letter or drawing to other grandchildren.

All workshop materials and guidelines will be supplied by the artists. Program creations may be included in Horoshko and Singer’s final project, to be compiled in 2015. Call 970-529-4445 for more information.

Blessing of the Animals planned

A Blessing of the Animals will be held north of the duck pond and south of the tennis courts on Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. Animals large and small – four-legged, two-legged, furred and feathered, scaled and finned (and their humans) – are invited.

The service will be outdoors, so please have some way to contain any overly energetic friends. In case of rain, participants will gather at St. Barnabas Church, 110 W. North St.

Storytime theme is ‘Grab Bag Surprise’

“Grab Bag Surprise” is the October theme of the Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., Cortez, Colo.

The preschool Storytime program is every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Older children may join for a craft at 11:15 a.m.

The library offers a Storytime at the Cortez Farmers Market every Saturday at 10:30 a.m., weather permitting, following the same theme.

Turkey shoot planned Sept. 27

A turkey shoot is planned for on Saturday, Sept. 27, 11:30 am at the Four Corners Gun Club Outdoor Range at 29815 E. U.S. Highway 160.

Competition rounds include .22 Long Rifle shooting Lollipops and Soda Pop Cans; Pistol Shoot of Hand of Cards, Eggs and Water Balloons, with entries at $1 per game. High-powered Rifle 300 and 500 yards will be shooting exploding targets with entry at $2, and winner splits the pot.

No fully automatic weapons, and no armor-piercing ammo or tracers.

The chili feed will be $5 per bowl. Brought to you by the Four Corners Rifle and Pistol Club and the San Juan Basin Farm Bureau.
