Dispatch said there had been several calls about the same dog running at large. An officer reported to the residence and spoke with a couple who told the officer that their neighbor’s pit bull was not nice and had come after them before. The couple said the owner of the dog was just issued a summons in the previous two weeks for the dog running at large. The couple told the officer that they wanted the owner cited for letting the dog on their property again. The officer went to the owner of the dog’s residence and a pit bull ran up to him and was very friendly and started licking him. The owner of the pit bull said he was home when his dog got out, went straight over to get it and noticed his neighbors were outside. He said he asked them if they were already calling the police and they said they were. The man was issued a summons for his dog not being under control.
Tuesday, Aug. 27
Officers were dispatched to a residence located in the county for a report of what appeared to be four or five unmarked graves and a recently dug hole that appeared to be the size and depth consistent with a grave. The owners of the property said they had recently bought the property and their 10-year-old daughter was exploring and found the graves. After investigating and speaking with the previous owners of the property the police decided to excavate the gravesites. Each site contained the remains of an animal. At the completion of the process, the remains of each animal were left in its respective gravesite and reburied.
Wednesday, Aug. 28
Officers reported to the Ute Mountain Casino for a report of drug activity. Video surveillance showed a male handing off a baggie that contained a white substance to another male and a female. The two males denied having any baggies on them and agreed to be searched. There was nothing found on the two males and they were released. Surveillance also showed the female in another part of the casino that was under construction. It showed the female pick up something from that area, put it in her purse and leave. The woman was walking toward her vehicle when security contacted her and detained her in the security office. The woman agreed to be searched, the police found a Marlboro cigarette pack that contained five baggies. Two of the baggies contained a white powdery substance, one of which tested positive for methamphetamine. The woman was placed into custody and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
Saturday, Aug. 31
A vehicle was pulled over because it had an inoperable driver-side headlight. The officer contacted the driver and noticed there were five small children in the backseat sharing the three factory-installed seatbelts. The woman said she did not realize her headlight was out and that she and her children were just going up the road to a hotel. Dispatch confirmed that the woman had a contempt-of-court warrant out of Durango. The woman was arrested and requested that her children be left in the care of a family friend. The woman was issued a warning on the traffic violations and was informed to provide safety restraints for her children when transporting them in a vehicle.
