DURANGO – The southwestern part of the state proved why they have gotten to host the BMX state championships so frequently in recent years – the Four Corners is a hotbed for riding excellence. With the highest level of enrollment among their local BMX chapter among Colorado’s many BMX circuits, Durango earned the right to host another Colorado State BMX Championship over the weekend of Aug. 29 and 30 at Cundiff Park.
Cortez BMX has proudly joined Durango BMX in making the region into the epicenter for the fastest riders on dirt – and the state championship results bore out that dominance. Montezuma County riders captured more than their fair share of top six finishes, including a handful of state titles to continue their streak of topping the podium across the different age groups and rider skill levels.
Lavender Blacow led the way with a pair of titles, winning the 17-20 age group in both the expert and cruiser division – matching her double-victory she enjoyed in 2025, while Randy Rodd topped the field in the 56 Intermediate and 56-60 Cruiser classes for a double title.
Also topping their fields, Cedar Blacow won the 11-year-old cruiser race to add another state title to accompany his title run last fall, Dustin Kelso claimed another cruiser title in the 31-35 age division, and Quin Taylor won the intermediate race in the 15-year-old division.
Cortez BMXers added plenty of runner-up performances as well, including Alex Abeyta (14 Intermediate), Blake Jones (16 Intermediate), Cash Taylor (14 Intermediate), Andrew Lewis (46 Intermediate) and Bryson Higman (14 Cruiser).
Other riders accounted for the rest of the 23 top-six performances, including Cedar Blacow (3rd – 11 Expert), Karston Rodd (3rd – 7 Intermediate), Grady White (3rd – 17-20 Cruiser), Mac Lewis (4th – 8 Intermediate), Aaron Pawlicki (4th – 41 Novice), Davien Pawlicki (4th – 17-20 Expert), Rhett Tabor (4th – 4 Novice), Will Sumner (5th – 26 Novice), Garrin Holcombe (6th – 6 Intermediate), along with Higman (4th – 14 Intermediate) and Kelso (4th – 26 Intermediate) earning a second top-six position apiece.
Cortez BMX continues their weekly practices and races for another month as the season at the Baxter Family BMX Track in Parque de Vida. Practices continue on Tuesdays, with Monday and Saturday races through the end of September.
