A vibrant community depends on having trusted spaces where neighbors can discuss, debate and solve challenges that affect us locally and regionally. Over the years, and more recently, we have heard from many of you who feel that our opinion pages have at times leaned too far in one political direction and have sometimes failed to represent the full spectrum of perspectives in our region. While we remain committed to taking stands on issues of public importance, we take this feedback seriously.
Our goal is not to promote divisiveness or tell you what to think but to build bridges across Southwest Colorado and Northwest New Mexico. We want to inform our readers about complex issues with well-researched viewpoints. We are seeking a new Perspectives Editor who will promote dialogue and develop relationships with the broad range of voices in our region. Moving forward, when this editor shares an opinion, it will typically run alongside a counterpoint perspective from a community member with an opposing view who has the background and expertise on the subject. A short bio of the author will accompany their viewpoint.
Further, we are forming a newly structured Editorial Board to represent the full breadth of our region, including farmers, ranchers, energy workers, tribal members, teachers, small business owners, civic leaders and many others (regardless of race, gender, religion or political persuasion).
We remain committed to informing readers about complex issues affecting our region and taking institutional stands thoughtfully. Such stands are anchored in public duty (e.g., government transparency, public safety, fiscal stewardship, the public's right to know, ethical conduct and conflict of interest). Perhaps most importantly, we want to listen. We invite you to join this conversation, submit your views and help us shape a public square that truly reflects the diverse voices of this amazing place we all call home.
Our current Opinion Editor, Ellen Stein, will transition to a new role directing the fundraising activities of the Four Corners Journalism Fund (fcjf.org) a philanthropic initiative launched in 2025 by Ballantine Communications to strengthen journalism in Southwest Colorado and Northwest New Mexico.
