Painter Peggy Cloy will exhibit her newest collection of artwork, the Remembrance Series, at Turquoise Raven Art Gallery starting Saturday and running through Aug. 29 at the gallery’s location on 104 E. Main St. in Cortez.
A reception will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 8, and Cloy will give a talk about her art at 6 p.m. Aug. 14. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Peggy Cloy and her husband Lee Cloy moved to the area in 1992 and operated Willowtail Springs Nature Preserve and Education Center, a bed-and-breakfast in Mancos. In the time they have lived in Montezuma County, they have been active in the local art community. This is Peggy Cloy’s first one-person show since she and Lee left Wilowtail over a year ago, a news release from Turquoise Raven Art Gallery said.
Her artistic style was described by the gallery as one that draws on expressionist and abstract expressionist traditions.
Some of her influences include Claude Monet, Franz Kline, Oskar Kokoschka and Willem de Kooning.
“However, I was very interested in the women, such as Louise Nevelson and Miriam Shapiro and the ‘decorative’ artists and weavers, as well as Klimt and the so called ‘craft’ artists such as those who worked in fiber from weaving to giant sculpture,” Cloy said. “Early on in my youth I loved ‘site specificity’ sculpture … gardens-big and nature in all its manifestations and the human form.”
The gallery added that Cloy’s work is held in private, public and corporate collections around the world, with many located in the Northwestern U.S. Her studio is located in the Mancos area.
