The San Juan National Forest enacted Stage 2 fire restrictions that entered effect Wednesday as the Ferris Fire and other fires burn across the state.
The restrictions took effect at 12:01 a.m. with the aim of protecting the public and natural resources while fire danger remains at a critical high in Southwest Colorado, a news release from San Juan National Forest said. Elevated restrictions came about due to current and forecast weather, low fuel moisture, active fires in the region and limited firefighting resources.
They will remain in effect until Dec. 31 unless rescinded.
The restrictions include all San Juan National Forest System lands in Montezuma, Dolores, San Juan, La Plata, Archuleta, Conejos, Hinsdale, Mineral and Rio Grande counties.
Under the Stage 2 rules, igniting or building a fire, campfire, charcoal barbecue or grill is strictly prohibited, except for devices that can be fueled solely by liquid or gas that can easily be turned on and off. When using this kind of a device, it is noted that it should be used in an area cleared of all flammable materials, with three feet of space between the device and anything that could catch on fire.
Smoking is also banned, unless done in an enclosed vehicle or building, and welding or utilizing a torch with an open flame is not allowed. Explosives, such as fireworks, are also prohibited.
Those visiting the forest should also ensure chains are secure, tire pressure is maintained and that brakes are working properly to prevent sparks.
Violations are punishable as a Class B misdemeanor, with fines up to $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, and/or up to six months in jail. Patrols will enforce the rules.
These restrictions are temporary and will change as conditions improve or deteriorate.
“Fire restrictions do not prevent wildfires. It is every forest visitor’s and camper’s responsibility to prevent wildfires,” the Forest Service said.
To report a wildfire, call 911. For more information on the San Juan National Forest and the new restrictions, call (970) 247-4874 or visit the forest's website at bit.ly/SJNFstage2.
Firefighters continue to battle the Ferris Fire, which is located northwest of Dolores. The fire originally ignited on San Juan National Forest as three separate fires after suspected lightning, later merging into one. As of Tuesday morning, the fire has burned nearly 20,000 acres at 0% containment due to high winds and severe conditions, and would continue to grow over the course of the day.
