Cortez Middle School track athletes set records to close out season

CORTEZ – The Montezuma-Cortez Middle School track and field team made sure to end their season with a bang.

Wrapping up their schedule with the San Juan Basin League championships, the Panthers closed the season with six new school records while finishing third as a team in both the boys and girls competitions. Under the guidance of coaches Daisy Ragland, Ashley Brito, and Monique Mack, the Panthers won six events between their two squads at the league meet.

One of their champions set a new school record in the process, as eighth-grader Braxton Thornbrugh ran away with the 100 meters in a time of 11.80 seconds. Seventh-grader Harley Hampton added another individual school record in the 50 meters (6.97).

The Panthers prided themselves on strong relays, taking down three SJBL victories among the various relay events.

Earlier in the season, the Panthers posted new program bests in four separate relays, including the girls 4 x 100 (Hampton, Ellee Lloyd, Presley Oliver, and Ashlynn Forsman – 54.90) and girls sprint medley relay (Hampton, Lloyd, Forsman, and Summer Lovett – 2:09.35).

The boys also had a pair of records in the sprint medley relay (Thornbrugh, Zaine Brito, Zane Herrmann, and Aniceto Cano-Aguilar – 1:49.28) and 4 x 400 (Brito, Herrmann, Cano-Aguilar, and Noah Hobbs – 4:02.02).
