After more than 50 years, the Montezuma County chapter of the Colorado Medical Society has closed and donated its remaining $8,000 to the Southwest Memorial Hospital Foundation Cancer Grant Fund in memory of Dr. Leonard Cain.
According to Karla Demby, Cain practiced family medicine in Cortez from 1986 to 2010, served as director of Hospice of Montezuma and worked at Southwest Memorial Hospital.
“He is remembered fondly by colleagues and patients as a compassionate patient-centered physician,” Demby said.
Cain died in 2012 after a two-year battle with lung cancer.
The donation from the group of retired physicians will add to the $10,000 the Southwest Memorial Hospital Foundation awards annually to help cancer patients offset the cost of care.
Patients may apply online for assistance at www.swhealth.org/southwest-memorial-hospital-foundation. Those who are waiting for a cancer grant award do not need to apply again.
To donate in Cain’s memory, send a check to the SWMH Foundation, P.O. Box 1585, Cortez, CO 81321. “Cancer grant” should be noted on the check.
